一期一会

Hi Hi sisters .... I hope you had a relaxing weekend. I read an enlightening post in Chinese Baidu by YJ影之国 about '一期一会' which triggered me to look a bit more into this phrase. Wondering what I am talking about? Just to refresh your memory, remember sometimes Yong Joon would include this message in his autograph?

He used it quite a few times during his visit in Japan, especially to people whom he personally knows of. 一期一会 (pronounced ichi-go ichi-e) is a Japanese expression meaning 'one chance in a lifetime'. It dates back to the rich culture of Japanese tea ceremony (chanoyu) symbolizing each tea meeting (chakai) is a unique experience. Through the calm settings and formal rituals of chanoyu, the host and guests accomplish a spiritual harmony and appreciation for tea. This unique hospitality which may not be recreated again is being treasured as 'ichi-go ichi-e'.

My poor memory only supplies me with 2 incidents of Yong Joon writing 一期一会 : one is to the Japanese reporter after their April Snow interview in the Tokyo Grand Hyatt (still locating that picture). The other one is he wrote in this hotel (which one?) guest book during his secret visit to Gosireh in 2007. I think to Yong Joon, every meeting he has with every person is so precious and unique to him. He probably realizes that in his present position, it is highly unlikely that he will be meeting with the same people under the same circumstance again. 一期一会 reminds people to treasure every moment and give all of ourselves because that could be the only chance, the only meeting we have. When we think about the wonderful people we meet in our daily lives, is that also 'ichi-go ichi-e'?

Dear Jaime

Is great to hear that but I think our prince always used the correct phrase, quote, words & etc at the right place and time. He actually is a good role model.

Sometime we heard about the sudden passing of our loved one and friends, in that moment we will said in our mind life is really very short. Therefore we should treasured our meeting with whatover, cause it could be after this meeting we will never see them again. This is true cause I experienced before.

Take care

Jenny

Dearest Jaime and Bae sisters:
What a beautiful phrase for a revelation of the moment!
1. Knowing Bae Yong Joon as artist and man, even only from afar, reading and writing about him is ichi-go ichi-e.
2. Knowing and interacting with dear Jaime, BB and other Bae sisters to me, is also ichi-go ichi-e.
In Zen Buddhism, this is a moment of satori, that cannot be recreated and therefore treasured all the more.

Dear jenny,

I totally understand what you mean. Remember when Yujin first learned about JunSang's death, she ran out of the classroom and kept saying, 'What should I do? I don't remember JunSang's face!' Unfortunately there are times when you realize you are never going to see that person again, but you can't remember (no matter how hard you try) how your last meeting was and what were the last words you spoke. Hopefully we still have a chance to do better next time! Hope you are feeling fine!

Dear Josephine,

Thanks for saying what is in my heart. I feel the same way, knowing Yong Joon and the BYJ family is truly ichigo ichie. Every time I say goodbye to a sister (especially the overseas ones), I really don't know if I will ever see them again. Please take care!

Hello Jaime,

Like bb, I was hoping to find a post today as a clue wrt your state of wellbeing. Glad to "see" you and happy to read this lovely post.

So strange how I was going through "the usual fantasy" yesterday, thinking about what I would say to him if ever we met by chance, one on one, and the notion of "we will likely never meet again" was uppermost in my mind. Not in a sad way but meaning our words had to count. Well, mine anyway, because he gets a chance to include his messages in greetings.

Dear Jaime,

This is a real inspiring quote. “一期一会”, once in a life time, it reminds me the precious of the people we meet every day, the precious of the things we do every day, and the precious of the life itself. I think Yong Joon has this mentality not only to the people he met, but also to the things he did. This is why he excels on everything, and this is why he inspired so many people.

Hi Jaime,

So sorry we missed each other in your neighborhood.

You know what? My very first post on Quilt was on this 'Ichigo Ichie' At that time, I as a person who has learned 'way of tea' for quite a while, was very happy to know HRH used this phrase. Just recently I found a story about Yong Joon's encounter with a Joon bear artist Joan. I think I will translate it into English.
Have a nice 'Golden week holidays!'.
